“The first time | went to the Schine Auburn Theater — or the ‘Auburn,’ as we called it — was in 1943. L was 5 years old. My grandmother McGee took me there to see my first movie. It was Called ‘Thousands Cheer’ with Gene Kelly and an all-star cast. | had never seen anything like that theater. There was a ticket-taker and there were ushers — all in uniform. My grandmother let me buy some candy at the candy counter. I can still taste that candy today. When we took our seats | looked at all the stars in the ceilings and on the walls. Eventually the curtains parted and the movie started with the MGM lion roaring. This started my lifelong love of the movies. J went to the other three theaters in Auburn — the Jefferson, the Palace and the Capital — many times, but the ‘Auburn’ was always special. We went there on Sundays. It cost 16 cents for a licket.’’
        — Joe Mitchell

‘‘My fondest memory of the Auburn Schine Theater was when my father took me there to see ‘Dr. Zhivago.” I have a clear memory of this. He took me, no brothers or sisters. Just me. I remember the soft patter sound of feet traveling up and down the lush carpeting on the stairs, and the planets and the stars. I took that opulence for granted as I visited the theater many times over the years. I thought it would be there forever.’’
        — Ginny Leonard Kent

“One day when I was about 11 years old, my sister invited me to join her and her friends to see a movie at the Auburn Schune Theater. They gave me their money and instructed me to purchase children’s tickets, Inside the theater, the gicls walked in ahead of me, each one gesturing toward me as they passed the usher, When it was my tum, I handed the usher the six children's tickets. “Hey, those girls aren’t under the age of 12! he insisted, “Why, that last one parks next to me in the school lot!” The usher was Horace Whipple and that girl was Jeanne Hickey Curtin. Oh, and the tick- ets were 12 cents each.”
        — Marge Leonard
